Land Economists win awards for real estate research

Dr Eva Steiner and Miss Klara Kan are the recipients of two Aareal Awards of Excellence in recognition of outstanding scientific research in real estate economics.

Dr Eva Steiner, University Lecturer at the Department of Land Economy and Fellow of St John’s College, has won the Aareal Award of Excellence in Real Estate Research 2015. She won the award for her PhD thesis which promoted a clearer understanding of Real Estate Investment Trust capital structure choices.

At the same time, Land Economy graduate Klara Kan won the award in the category of MSc thesis. Klara's dissertation investigated the risk-return characteristics of listed real estate companies from twelve countries between 1997 and 2013 using a multi-factor approach. Klara completed the MPhil in Real Estate Finance at Cambridge in 2014 and is now working for PricewaterhouseCoopers.

The Aareal Award of Excellence is awarded by the Real Estate Management Institute (REMI) of the EBS Business School and Aareal Bank AG. This annual award, now in its eighth year, recognises academically-outstanding research work in real estate economics, and attracts submissions from around the world, particularly from Europe, North America and Asia. Topics set for this year’s award were Real Estate Management, Real Estate Finance and Real Estate Economics for the three categories of Dissertation, Research Paper, and MSc-/BSc-/Diploma/Thesis.

The awards will be presented to Dr Steiner and Miss Kan at a ceremony held on 6 March.

Dr Franz Fuerst of The Cambridge Real Estate Research Centre and Department of Land Economy was invited to deliver the academic keynote speech at the EBS Real Estate Congress on 6 March, after Eva and Klara received their prizes at this event.
